Before any trade: how many lots so you never lose more than the risk you chose?
Lot size
0.02
Risk budget
$10.00
Estimated actual risk
$8.00
0.80%
Pip value at this lot
$0.20
The lot is rounded down to 0.01, so the actual risk is equal to or below the budget. It's an estimate at the stop: spread and slippage can change the real loss.

1) Money at risk = account balance × risk %. 2) Lot size = money at risk ÷ (stop loss in pips × 10). On gold (XAU/USD) a pip is $0.10 and one lot's pip value is $10. Example: $1,000 balance at 1% risk = $10. A 40-pip stop → 10 ÷ (40 × 10) = 0.025, i.e. 0.02 lots after rounding down.
On most platforms a $1 move on gold = 10 pips (a pip is $0.10). So a $4 stop loss is 40 pips.
Most professional traders risk no more than 1–2% of the account per trade, so a short losing streak doesn't damage the account.
